China: The Liberty Pulse

For this Liberty pulse, I’ll have to say that I didn’t agree. Our Humanities B class rated China at 6.4, but I did not think how they rated was quite measuring liberty, instead it seemed to be rating how the government was doing.  I will post the results under the Countries bar, but you will probably see another rating which is lower.  There is also a Humanities A class, and I decided I agreed more with their rating, o I will be including it.

China:The Second Week

Out second week was the week where we took all of our findings and came to a conclusion about China’s liberty pulse rating. Our main questions for the week were:

  • What can China teach us about Liberty?
  • Family Discussion Question: What can we learn from the history of China?

China really opened my eyes to how government can abuse it’s own rules.  So that means that it doesn’t matter if they say they have freedom of speech because the government might sometimes break those laws and go around them.  I also learned how important education is.  In China all the kids went to public school or day care and were taught what the government wanted to teach them.

China: The touring experience

I haven't posted in a while, but now I am posting about my class’s 2 week visit to china. (If you have been following my blog, you will know this is not literal!)  We had the chance to make some delicious stir fry, walk the wall of China, and even make a paper dragon.  In doing all of this, we learned much about Chinese history and culture.

Since the beginning the semester, we have been reading Red Scarf Girl, an auto biography of a girl who lived at the time of the Chinese cultural revolution.  It REALLY showed how much education impacts a country’s welfare.  If you have not read this book, you should DEFINITALY read this heart touching book.

From Egypt to Israel

Last week my class and I explored Egypt, pretending to be archeologists, on a big dig.  During this extremely eventful dig, we uncovered 6 spectacular Egyptian artifacts.
Now, this week we are traveling to Israel.  In our Monday class we pretended that we were flying from Egypt to Israel. We will be exploring Israel's government, people and land.

Starting in our Home Country

We are beginning our trip this week in our own country, America. By the end of Thursday I will have our country's rating posted on the Countries page.  To know exactly how we will be rating each country, take a look at the Liberty Pulse page. We are all excited and eager to start this trip, and I am excited to see how it turns out!

5 Shifts

We haven't even talked about our Liberty Project in class for 2 weeks.  We had midterms, and then talked about the 5 shifts, that all combined, have brought us to where we are.
Here they are in chronological order:

  1. The founding of America: Brought many people's ideas together to create a democratic republic.
  2. The Civil War: Abolished slavery in America.
  3. The industrual revolution: Brought many people into cities, and was the begining of mass production.
  4. The technological revolution: Made it so that you can talk and communicate to anyone.
  5. The family revolution: This basically is how the family has changed over the years.
